86 Eighty Six manga is a story about the Republic of San Magnolia, which has been at war with the Empire of Giad for nine years. Initially, the Republic suffered heavy losses to the Empire’s autonomous Legions. However, they developed their own autonomous units called Juggernauts, controlled remotely by Handlers. The public believes these machines fight the war, but the Juggernauts are actually piloted by humans known as the “86”—a minority group called the Colorata. The 86 were once equal citizens but were oppressed by the dominant Alba race and government, deemed subhuman, stripped of personal names, and confined to internment camps in the 86th District. They are forced to fight in the war for better treatment.
Major Vladilena “Lena” Milizé, an Alba noble and officer, speaks out against the mistreatment of the Colorata and the government’s lies. She becomes the Handler for the Spearhead Squadron on the Eastern Front, an elite unit of 86 veterans with earned names. Led by Shinei “The Undertaker” Nouzen, the squad is notorious because its Handlers often go insane or commit suicide. Lena, who sympathizes with the 86, gets to know the Spearhead Squadron and, alongside Shinei, discovers a dark secret about the Republic and the war with the Empire.
